Sometimes things happen by chance. You might flip a coin or roll dice. Math helps us track these events. We call this a random variable.

A random variable is a way to turn chance into numbers. It is a math tool. It takes every possible outcome and gives it a value. For example, a coin toss has two outcomes. We can map heads to one and tails to minus one.

There are two main types of random variables. The first is a discrete random variable. These use separate numbers with gaps between them. Counting the number of children in a family is a discrete variable.

The second type is a continuous random variable. These have a smooth flow with no gaps. A person's height is a continuous variable. You can be any height within a range.

We use these to find a probability distribution. This is a list of how likely each value is. A man named Pafnuty Chebyshev was the first to think about these systematically.
