Probability mass function

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine you are playing a game with a single die. You want to know the exact chance of rolling a six. To find this, mathematicians use a special tool called a probability mass function. This tool helps us understand discrete random variables. These are things we can count, like the sides of a die or the number of heads in coin flips.

A probability mass function tells us the chance that a variable is exactly equal to a certain value. It is a way to map out every possible result and how likely it is to happen.

Think of these chances as physical weight or mass. This is why we call it a probability mass function. All the pieces of mass must be non-negative, meaning they cannot be less than zero. Most importantly, all the pieces must add up to exactly one.

If you add every possible outcome together, you get one whole. This is like having one whole cake and sharing it among different people. If one outcome has the most mass, we call that value the mode. The mode is simply the result that is most likely to occur.

There are different ways to group these chances. A Bernoulli distribution is used for experiments with only two possible outcomes. A common example is tossing a coin to see if it lands on heads or tails. If you do many trials, you might use a binomial distribution. This models how many successes you get when you try something many times. For example, it could show the chance of getting exactly one six when rolling a die three times.

Another way is the geometric distribution, which counts how many tries it takes to get one success.

Math can also handle much larger groups of outcomes. A categorical distribution works when there are two or more categories. If you have many different variables at once, you use a multinomial distribution. This helps find the chance of different combinations of successes. Even if there are an infinite number of outcomes, the math still works. For example, an exponentially declining distribution can have infinite positive integers as outcomes. Even then, the total mass must still add up to one.

This math helps us make sense of a messy world. We can use it to study everything from simple coin flips to complex combinations. It is different from continuous functions, which deal with things that are measured rather than counted. In those cases, we use a different tool called a probability density function. By using the mass function, we can stay organized with things we can list. It turns random events into clear, predictable patterns.
