In the Holy Roman Empire, a small group of leaders held great power. These leaders were called prince-electors.

Their main job was to pick the next king. Once a king was chosen, he would later become the Emperor.

In 1356, a rule called the Golden Bull set how these elections worked. The electors were very important rulers. They had special rights that other princes did not have. They also held high offices in the royal house.

Some electors were church leaders, like the Archbishop of Mainz. Others were secular rulers, like the Duke of Saxony. These leaders had special jobs during coronations. For example, one might be the Arch-Cupbearer. This meant they helped with the king's drinks. Another might be the Arch-Marshal. They held special signs on their shields to show these roles.

The office of elector ended in 1806 when the Empire itself ended.
