A pressure vessel is a special kind of container.

It is designed to hold liquids or gases. These substances are kept at a pressure that is different from the air around us. This difference in pressure can be very large. Some vessels hold things at much higher pressure than the outside air. Others might hold a vacuum, which is a very low pressure. These containers are important for many different jobs. They help us store energy and move things safely.

How these vessels work depends on their shape and strength. The walls must resist the force of the contents inside. Engineers often use a cylinder shape with rounded ends called heads.

A sphere is actually the strongest shape for holding pressure. A sphere can be twice as strong as a cylinder with the same wall thickness. However, spheres are much harder and more expensive to build. Most people use cylinders because they are easier to make. The thickness of the walls must grow if the tank gets larger. This helps the walls handle the stress from the pressure.

Safety is the most important part of making these vessels. Because they hold so much energy, accidents can be very dangerous. Engineers follow strict rules called codes to keep people safe. In the United States, they use the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. In Europe, they follow the Pressure Equipment Directive. Every new vessel must be checked by an authorized inspector. A nameplate is attached to the vessel to show its history.

This plate lists the maximum pressure and the date it was made. It also shows the company that built it.

Before a vessel is used, it must pass many tests. One common way to check them is through hydrostatic testing.

This test uses water to fill the container. Engineers prefer water because it is much safer than using gas. If a container breaks during a water test, the water does not expand quickly. Gases can expand explosively if a container fails. Other tests include radiography, which uses X-rays to look inside the metal. They might even test a sample by breaking it on purpose. This ensures the quality is high before the vessel goes to work.

You can find pressure vessels in many places in your life. They are used in diving cylinders for scuba divers. They are also used in the cabins of airplanes to keep air inside.

Submarines use a pressure hull to keep the ocean out. Even some cars use them for air brakes. They are used in big factories to store chemicals like ammonia or propane. From small tanks to huge industrial structures, they are everywhere. They help keep our modern world running smoothly and safely.
