physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pressure is a way to measure a push. It happens when a force hits a surface.

Pressure force area

Pressure depends on the area of the surface. Area is the amount of space a surface covers. If you use a small area, the pressure is high. A sharp knife has a tiny edge. This concentrates the force. That is why a knife can cut. A finger is wide and flat. It spreads the force out. This makes the pressure low.

We use different units to measure pressure. The main unit is the pascal (Pa). One pascal is one newton of force on one square metre. People also use pounds per square inch, or psi.

Some tools use liquid to show pressure. We call these manometric units. They measure how high a liquid rises in a tube. Mercury is a heavy liquid used for this.

One unit called a torr is based on mercury.

Air also has pressure. This is called atmospheric pressure. It is the weight of the air around us. This pressure helps keep our air near Earth.
