Pressure

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pressure is a way to measure a push on a surface. It happens when a force hits an object at a right angle. Scientists use the symbol p or P to represent it. Pressure is a scalar quantity, which means it has no specific direction. While the force itself has a direction, the pressure stays the same even if the surface tilts.

This concept is very important in science. It helps us understand how liquids and gases behave in containers. It also helps us study how planets hold onto their air.

How pressure works depends on the area of the surface. Imagine pushing on a wall with your finger. You will not leave a mark because the force is spread out. Now imagine pushing a thumbtack into that same wall. The force is the same, but the tiny point concentrates it. This creates much higher pressure on one small spot.

A sharp knife works the same way. The thin edge has a very small area. This creates enough pressure to cut through things easily. If you use the flat side, the pressure is too low to cut.

There are many different ways to measure pressure. The main unit used by scientists is the pascal (Pa). One pascal is equal to one newton of force on one square metre. In the United States, people often use pounds per square inch (psi). Other units include the bar and the decibar. Oceanographers use decibars to measure the deep sea. This is helpful because pressure in the ocean increases by about one decibar for every metre of depth.

We can also measure pressure by how high a liquid rises in a tube. This is called a manometric unit. People often use mercury or water for this task. Mercury is very dense, so it allows for a shorter tube. One unit called the torr is based on the height of a mercury column.

Doctors use these units to check blood pressure. Divers also use special units like metres of sea water (msw) to stay safe underwater.

Pressure is happening all around us right now. The air in our atmosphere has pressure because of Earth's gravity. This gravity pulls the gas toward the planet. This keeps our air from drifting away into space. In a container, gas pressure comes from molecules hitting the walls. These tiny molecules are always moving in random directions. When they hit a surface, they create the push we call pressure.
