Preschool

Preschool is an educational space for children before they begin compulsory primary school. It is also known as pre-primary school, play school, or nursery school. These institutions offer early childhood education to prepare children for formal schooling. They can be operated by private groups or by public governments. Many preschools receive subsidies from public funds to help families. The typical age range for these programs is 4 to 6 years old. However, some programs allow children to start as early as 2 years old.

Learning in these settings focuses on several key developmental areas. Children engage in cognitive, psychosocial, and physical development-based learning. This helps them understand their environment and improve verbal communication. Common themes in a curriculum include mathematical development and literacy. Children also work on personal, social, and emotional development. They explore the world through creative and expressive activities. Many modern experts suggest that high-quality preschools should be play-based.

This approach allows children to learn how to make decisions and control impulses.

Terminology for these schools varies significantly depending on the country. In the United States, "Pre-K" or Pre-Kindergarten refers to programs for 4 to 5-year-olds. This initiative aims to improve access to pre-primary education. In the US, "daycare" typically serves children from birth to 2.5 years old. Kindergarten in the US often refers to children aged 5 to 6. In many other parts of the world, kindergarten represents the first stage of formal education. Some European countries classify kindergarten as ISCED level 0. This means it is the level of education before primary school starts.

The history of preschool began as a way to help vulnerable children. In 1779, Johann Friedrich Oberlin and Louise Scheppler founded a center in Strasbourg. They provided care for children whose parents worked during the day. In 1816, Robert Owen opened the first infant school in New Lanark, Scotland. Owen wanted children to receive a moral education to prepare them for work. Later, Samuel Wilderspin opened hundreds of infant schools in London starting in 1819. Wilderspin is credited with inventing the playground as part of his educational system.

Friedrich Fröbel played a massive role in spreading these educational ideas. He opened a Play and Activity institute in 1837 in Germany. He renamed this institute "Kindergarten" on June 28, 1840. His methods spread globally as women trained by him opened schools across Europe. The first kindergarten in the United States was founded in 1856 in Wisconsin. Elizabeth Peabody founded the first English-language kindergarten in 1860. In 1873, Susan Blow established the first publicly financed kindergarten in St. Louis. In Canada, the first public-school kindergartens opened in Berlin, Ontario, in 1882.

Preschool has a significant impact on a child's long-term development. The first three years of life are a critical period for language and socialization. During the ages of 3 to 5, the human brain grows most rapidly. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that preschool attendees often score higher on cognitive assessments. In 2022, 68% of 4-year-olds in the United States attended preschool. The Economic Policy Institute notes that these programs provide long-term economic benefits. These benefits include higher earnings and increased tax revenues for society.

While many see the benefits, there are ongoing debates about preschool methods. Some studies, such as one by UC Berkeley and Stanford, have raised questions. That study of 14,000 preschools found a temporary boost in math and reading. However, it also suggested possible negative effects on social cooperation. There is also debate regarding whether the curriculum should be academic or play-based. Proponents of academic curricula favor structured activities for literacy and numeracy. Others believe child-initiated exploration is more effective for young learners.
