Child care involves the supervision and care of children. This typically includes children from three months to 18 years old.

While parents provide much care, the term often refers to help from non-parents. This includes a wide range of professionals, institutions, and social customs. Early child care is a vital part of how children develop. It can influence how well a child does in school later in life.

There are several ways to provide this care. In-home care happens inside the child's own house. This is often done by nannies, au pairs, or family members.

Family child care occurs in the home of the provider. These small settings often have a low adult-to-child ratio.

Center-based care happens in commercial facilities like daycares or preschools. These centers follow standardized and regulated systems of care.

In-home care offers a very close bond between the child and caregiver. Nannies or au pairs might also help with household tasks. They may do laundry, cook meals, or run errands.

Because there are no required background checks for private in-home care, parents must be very vigilant. Nanny agencies can help by checking references and criminal backgrounds. While in-home care is often the most expensive option, it offers great stability. It can also be ideal for parents with jobs that cannot be left, like nurses.

Family child care providers work in their own homes with small groups. This setting allows for more personalized and individual attention.

These providers can often offer flexible hours, including evenings or weekends. In the United States, some facilities seek accreditation from special organizations. The National Association for the Education of Young Children manages standards for centers. The National Association of Family Child Care Providers awards credentials to home providers. These settings allow siblings to stay together and children to learn from different ages.

Commercial care centers focus on physical and mental development. Teachers in these centers build relationships to help students reach higher values.

These centers provide socialization and help children understand a classroom setting. Preschools are a specific type of center for 3 and 4-year-olds.

Older children usually move into primary school environments. In many western countries, education becomes compulsory around age five or six. At this stage, schools act "in loco parentis," meaning they provide supervision in place of a parent.

Labor is the largest expense for all child care providers. In a 1999 Canadian survey, labor made up 63% of center costs. The average profit for these centers was only 5.3%. The workforce is also very gender-specific. In Canada, 95% of the workforce is female. In the United States, child care workers were 95.5% female in 1999. Many workers earn low wages, often close to the local minimum wage. In Canada, these workers earn about 60% of the average workforce wage.

Regulations often dictate how many children one adult can watch. For example, a rule might require a 1:4 ratio for infants aged 6 to 12 months. For children aged 18 to 24 months, the ratio might be 1:9.

Quality of care is very important for development. Children in low-quality centers may have less advanced vocabulary or reading skills. On the other hand, non-profit facilities are often more likely to provide high-quality environments. Accessible and affordable child care also helps the economy. It allows more parents, especially mothers, to join the labor force.
