Praya dubia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The *Praya dubia* is a giant sea animal. It lives in deep ocean water. It can be as long as a blue whale. But it is thin like a broomstick. This animal is not one single creature. It is a colony of tiny parts called zooids. These zooids work together as a team. They cannot live on their own.

Many parts make up the colony. Some parts are like little motors. We call these nectophores. They push water to help the animal swim. Other parts are for eating. These are gastrozooids. They act as the mouth and stomach. Some parts are long tentacles. They use a sting to catch food. These stinging cells can paralyze small fish or shrimp.

The animal also makes its own light. This is called bioluminescence. It glows with a bright blue light to find prey. It can live in many places. It is found near Iceland and Chile. This animal has no known predators. It stays in the dark, deep water.
