Her presidency was the 12th in the history of the nation. As president, she acted as a head of state. This role is often a figurehead position. Usually, candidates for this role are chosen by consensus among political parties.

Patil was born on December 19, 1934, in Nadgaon, Maharashtra. Her family had a long history in the region. Her ancestor, Ramji Solanki, moved from Rajasthan during the Maratha era. Her father, Narayanrao Patil, worked as a lawyer. Patil pursued a high level of education. She earned a master's degree in Political Science and Economics from Mooljee Jetha College. She also earned a Bachelor of Law from Government Law College in Bombay.

After her studies, she practiced law at the Jalgaon District Court. She also focused on social issues regarding the conditions of Indian women.

Her political career began in 1962 when she was 27 years old. She was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. She later won seats in the Muktainagar constituency four times. Between 1985 and 1990, she served in the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of India's Parliament. From 1991 to 1996, she was a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of Parliament. She also served as the Governor of Rajasthan starting in 2004. She was the first woman to hold that specific governorship.

Patil was selected as the United Progressive Alliance candidate in June 2007. She was chosen as a compromise candidate. This happened because other leaders could not agree on different nominees. Her election was unusual because she faced a real challenger. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, a veteran from the Bharatiya Janata Party, ran as an independent.

Critics raised several concerns during the campaign. They questioned her experience and her charisma. Some also raised questions about her past use of parliamentary funds. Despite these challenges, Patil won the election on July 19, 2007. She received nearly two-thirds of the total votes.

During her five-year term, Patil made several significant decisions. She used her power to commute death sentences for 35 petitioners. This changed their sentences to life in prison. This was a record-breaking number of such actions. However, her term also faced many controversies. She traveled extensively to many foreign countries. By May 2012, she had completed 12 foreign trips to 22 different countries. These trips cost approximately Rs 205 crore.

Some people criticized the high cost of these travels.

Patil was also involved in various business and educational interests. She established the Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal to run schools and colleges. She also started the Shram Sadhana Trust to support working women. However, some of her business ventures faced legal problems. She co-founded the Pratibha Mahila Sahari Bank. This bank eventually ceased trading in 2003. The Reserve Bank of India cancelled its license. Auditors found that the bank gave illegal loans to her relatives. Some of these loans were never repaid, which led to the bank's liquidation.

After her presidency ended in July 2012, more issues arose. There were questions about her use of public funds for a retirement home. She also faced scrutiny regarding gifts given to her in her official role. She was eventually required to return many of these gifts. Despite these complications, her life remains a significant part of Indian political history. She remains a key figure for women in leadership. Her journey from a small village to the presidency is a major historical milestone.
