This site is situated approximately 5 kilometres west of the town of Jičín. These stone structures are part of a larger region known as Bohemian Paradise. In the Czech language, this beautiful area is called Český ráj. Because of their unique beauty, the rocks have been a protected natural reserve since 1933. This status ensures that the geological features remain preserved for future study and appreciation.

The history of these rocks began over 60 million years ago. Originally, the area was not filled with tall towers. Instead, the sandstone existed as a large, flat area called a plateau. Over many millions of years, the landscape underwent a massive transformation. This change happened through a geological process known as erosion. Erosion occurs when natural forces wear away the surface of the earth.

In this specific environment, wind and rain acted as the primary agents of change. These elements slowly chipped away at the sandstone plateau. As the soft stone vanished, the harder parts remained as tall, vertical structures.

This erosion process worked step by step to sculpt the current landscape. First, rain fell upon the surface of the sandstone plateau. The water seeped into cracks and helped break the stone apart. Next, wind moved across the landscape, carrying particles that rubbed against the rock. This constant movement of wind and water gradually carved deep gaps between the stones. Eventually, the flat plateau was broken into many individual rock towers. Each tower has a distinct shape shaped by the specific way the wind and rain hit it.

Because the towers have such unique shapes, people have given them many descriptive names. These names are based on how the sandstone looks to the human eye. For instance, one tower is known as the Elephant because of its form. Another tower is called the Eagle, resembling a large bird. You can also find a tower named the Monk at the site. There is a specific location referred to as the Devil's Kitchen. One of the most famous structures is called the Leaning Tower. These names help visitors imagine the different figures hidden in the stone.

The Prachov Rocks are also a very famous location for the film industry. The dramatic scenery makes it a perfect setting for various stories. Many different films and television shows have used the area as a filming location. For example, the movie Little Mermaid was filmed among these rocks. Other major productions include Britannia and Hellboy. You might also recognize the location from shows like Foundation or Nosferatu. Even Carnival Row and Van Helsing used the site for their scenes.

The visual texture of the sandstone provides a sense of history and fantasy for directors.

Geographically, the formation is a significant part of the Hradec Králové Region. It serves as a primary example of how sandstone reacts to long-term weather patterns. The site demonstrates the power of time and the elements on a massive scale. What was once a simple plateau is now a complex system of towers and gaps. This makes the area a vital site for understanding the physical world. It connects the study of geology with the beauty of the natural landscape.

Understanding the Prachov Rocks helps us see how the Earth changes over vast periods. The transition from a plateau to a series of towers shows the persistence of nature. It reminds us that even the hardest stone can be reshaped by rain and wind. The site remains a protected part of the Bohemian Paradise today. It stands as a testament to the geological history of the Czech Republic.
