Geographically, Potsdam is defined by its relationship with water and hilly terrain. The River Havel flows through the city. This river is a tributary of the Elbe.

The landscape consists of moraines. These are hills formed by glaciers during the last glacial period. Because of this terrain, the area is dotted with many lakes. There are approximately 20 lakes located within the city limits. These include the Griebnitzsee, Templiner See, and Sacrower See. Only about one quarter of the city is built up. The rest of the land remains as green space.

The city's layout was shaped by the Age of Enlightenment. This was a period focused on reason and nature.

Planners wanted to create a picturesque, pastoral dream. They achieved this by balancing architecture with the natural landscape. This design was intended to remind people of their connection to nature. This philosophy is most visible in the Sanssouci parks and palaces. Sanssouci is Germany's largest World Heritage Site.

The area shows signs of human occupancy as far back as the Bronze Age. It was once part of Magna Germania. After the migrations of Germanic peoples, Slavic tribes moved into the region. The city was likely founded after the 7th century by the Hevelli tribe. The first written record of the city is from the year 993. At that time, it was called Poztupimi. Emperor Otto III gifted the territory to the Quedlinburg Abbey. By 1317, the settlement was described as a small town. It officially received its town charter in 1345.

The city became a major political center under the Hohenzollern family. They held possession of Potsdam starting in 1415. In 1660, Frederick William I chose it as a hunting residence. This helped the city grow into a prominent location. In 1685, the Edict of Potsdam was issued. This edict granted religious freedom to many people. It attracted immigrants from France, Russia, the Netherlands, and Bohemia. This influx of people helped the economy recover and the population grow. Potsdam served as the capital of the Province of Brandenburg from 1815 until 1945. During this time, it was a residence for the Prussian royal family.

In 1945, the city hosted the Potsdam Conference. This meeting involved the heads of government from the USSR, the US, and the UK. They met to decide how to divide Germany following its surrender. This decision shaped German history for the next 45 years. The city also became a center for film production. In the south-eastern part of the city lies Babelsberg.

The city is divided into many administrative sections. There are seven historic quarters called Stadtteile. There are also nine new suburbs called Ortsteile. These suburbs joined the city in 2003. In total, the city is divided into 32 Stadtteile. These are further divided into 84 statistical districts called Bezirke.

Beyond universities, there are more than 30 research institutes located here. This scientific community makes the city a key part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. The climate is characterized by cold winters with frequent snow. Summers are relatively warm, with average temperatures between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius. This combination of history, science, and nature makes Potsdam a unique urban center.
