The city was a home for Prussian kings and German Emperors. This lasted until the year 1918. In the 1600s, the city grew because of religious freedom. People from France, Russia, and the Netherlands moved there. This helped the city grow and become much stronger.

Important world events happened in this city during the 1900s.

The area shows signs of human occupancy as far back as the Bronze Age. It was once part of Magna Germania. After the migrations of Germanic peoples, Slavic tribes moved into the region. The city was likely founded after the 7th century by the Hevelli tribe. The first written record of the city is from the year 993. At that time, it was called Poztupimi. Emperor Otto III gifted the territory to the Quedlinburg Abbey. By 1317, the settlement was described as a small town. It officially received its town charter in 1345.

The city became a major political center under the Hohenzollern family. They held possession of Potsdam starting in 1415. In 1660, Frederick William I chose it as a hunting residence. This helped the city grow into a prominent location. In 1685, the Edict of Potsdam was issued. This edict granted religious freedom to many people. It attracted immigrants from France, Russia, the Netherlands, and Bohemia. This influx of people helped the economy recover and the population grow. Potsdam served as the capital of the Province of Brandenburg from 1815 until 1945. During this time, it was a residence for the Prussian royal family.
