Even the airport is very busy. Hanover Airport is the ninth-busiest airport in Germany.

By the 13th century, it became a larger town. In 1636, a ruler named George moved his home there. From 1714 to 1837, the kings of Great Britain also ruled Hanover. This was called a personal union. This meant the same person held power in two different places. However, these kings rarely visited the city themselves.

During the 20th century, the city faced very difficult times. During the era of the Nazi party, many Jewish people lived in Hanover. They were treated very badly and many were forced to leave. During World War II, the city was a major target for bombing. This was because it was such a busy center for trains and factories.

It serves as a vital hub within the North German Plain. The city is situated at the confluence of the River Leine and its tributary, the Ihme.

This geographic position helped the city grow from a small village into a large urban center. Today, Hanover is the 13th-largest city in Germany. Its population was approximately 535,932 in 2021. The broader Hanover Region is even larger. It contains about 1.16 million inhabitants as of 2019. This region is part of the Hanover–Braunschweig–Göttingen–Wolfsburg Metropolitan Region. This metropolitan area ranks as the 17th largest by GDP in the European Union.

Transportation is a core mechanism that drives the city's importance. Hanover acts as a major crossing point for many railway lines and motorways, known as Autobahnen. These routes connect major European lines in two main directions. The east-west lines connect Berlin to the Ruhr area, Düsseldorf, and Cologne. The north-south lines link Hamburg to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. Aviation also plays a large role in the region's connectivity. Hanover Airport is located north of the city in Langenhagen. It is currently the ninth-busiest airport in Germany.

Historically, Hanover has held many different political roles. In the 13th century, it received town privileges due to its position at a natural crossroads.

It served as the capital for several different territories over the centuries. These included the Principality of Calenberg and the Electorate of Hanover. From 1714 to 1837, the city was part of a personal union with the United Kingdom. This meant the British monarchs were also the rulers of Hanover. They held the title of dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg or Electors of Hanover. However, these kings rarely visited the city. Only one short visit was recorded during the reigns of the last three joint rulers.

The 19th century brought significant political changes to the region. In 1814, the electorate was upgraded to the Kingdom of Hanover. In 1837, the personal union with the United Kingdom ended. This happened because the heir to the British throne was female, Queen Victoria. Under semi-Salic law, Hanover could only be inherited by male heirs. Therefore, the crown passed to her uncle, Ernest Augustus. Later, in 1866, Prussia annexed Hanover during the Austro-Prussian War. This transformed the city into the capital of the Prussian Province of Hanover. During this era, the city saw the introduction of new technology like electric trams in 1893.

The 20th century brought periods of extreme hardship and destruction. During the Nazi era, the city's Jewish population faced severe persecution. In 1938, the Nazis burned the city's neo-romantic synagogue. Following this, many Jewish families were deported to places like Riga. In 1941, a plan called "Action Lauterbacher" began the ghettoisation of remaining Jewish families. During World War II, Hanover became a major target for strategic bombing. This was due to its role as a production center and transport junction.

Allied bombing raids destroyed more than 90% of the city center. Over 6,000 civilians were killed during these attacks. The US 84th Infantry Division captured the city on 10 April 1945.

Modern Hanover is a center for education and global commerce. The city hosts several notable institutes of higher learning. These include the Leibniz University Hanover and the Hanover Medical School. The latter is one of Germany's leading medical schools and includes a university hospital. The city is also famous for its massive fairground. This facility is the largest in the world due to many extensions.

It hosts major international events like the IAA Commercial Vehicles show. This is a leading global trade show for transport and logistics. The city also hosts the Schützenfest, which is the world's largest marksmen's festival.

Today, the city balances its history with its role as a modern capital. Many of its landmarks serve as reminders of the past. For example, the ruins of the Aegidienkirche were not rebuilt. They were kept as a memorial to the destruction of World War II.

Only about 25% of the city consists of buildings from before 1950. Hanover also participates in international peace efforts. It is a vice-president city of Mayors for Peace. This organization works to eliminate nuclear weapons worldwide. The city continues to be a vital part of the German and European landscape.
