Magdeburg became a center of law and religion. In 968, the Archbishopric of Magdeburg was founded. Adalbert of Magdeburg served as the first archbishop. This religious center included several other bishoprics. These were Havelberg, Brandenburg, Merseburg, Meissen, and Naumburg-Zeitz. In 1035, the city received a special patent. This allowed Magdeburg to hold trade exhibitions and conventions. This led to the creation of the Magdeburg rights. These were specific German town laws. They spread throughout much of Central and Eastern Europe. By the 13th century, the city joined the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful group of trading cities. At that time, it had more than 20,000 inhabitants.

The city has survived three major periods of devastation. The first catastrophe occurred in 1207. A massive fire destroyed large parts of the city. This included the Ottonian cathedral. The second major event happened during the Thirty Years' War. In 1631, the Catholic League sacked the city. This resulted in the deaths of 25,000 non-combatants. This was the largest loss of life in that war. After the conflict, only 4,000 people remained in the city. The third devastation occurred during World War II. In 1945, Allied forces bombed the city. This destroyed much of the city center.

Science and recovery define much of Magdeburg's later history. The city recovered quickly after the Thirty Years' War. This was largely due to Mayor Otto von Guericke. He was a famous scientist who lived in the city.

In 1680, he performed the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment. He used two large hemispheres to prove the existence of a vacuum. A vacuum is a space entirely empty of matter. This experiment had huge implications for the field of physics. The city also saw growth through different groups. In the 1680s, French Huguenots and Walloons formed communities here. By 1700, these groups included thousands of residents.

Today, Magdeburg is a modern and growing economic center. It was part of the German Democratic Republic from 1949 to 1990. Since German reunification, the city has seen many new projects. Many old buildings have been carefully restored. About 46% of the city consists of buildings from before 1950.
