Porphyry (geology)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Porphyry is a special kind of rock.

It has a unique look. You can see large crystals inside a fine background. We call these large crystals phenocrysts. The fine background is called the matrix.

This rock forms in two steps. First, hot melted rock called magma cools slowly deep underground. This slow cooling lets large crystals grow. Next, the remaining liquid cools very fast. This makes the tiny crystals in the matrix. This set of steps creates the porphyritic texture.

The name comes from a Greek word for purple.

Deep purple porphyry was very rare. It came from a quarry in Egypt. Because it was rare, Roman emperors loved it. They used it to show their power. They made big columns and statues from it. They even used it for imperial sarcophagi. These are large stone coffins for royalty. The stone was so special that it helped people respect the emperors.
