These minerals have plenty of room to grow into large, well-shaped crystals. These crystals are the phenocrysts. Next, the remaining liquid magma either erupts as lava or cools underground. This liquid cools very quickly. This fast cooling creates the very fine-grained matrix that surrounds the large crystals.

The name porphyry comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "purple." In the past, deep purple was the color of royalty. The Romans called their special stone "imperial porphyry." They valued it because it was very hard and beautiful. In 1928, a Canadian geologist named Norman L. Bowen recognized how this texture shows magma cools in stages. This discovery helped scientists understand how different rocks form over time.

The formation of porphyry happens in distinct stages of cooling. It begins deep in the Earth's crust with magma, which is hot, melted rock. This magma is usually a mixture of different minerals. During the first stage, the magma cools very slowly. This slow cooling allows certain minerals to crystallize first in a process called fractional crystallization. Because they have plenty of space and time, these minerals grow into large, well-shaped crystals called phenocrysts.

These crystals often have characteristic flat faces, known as euhedral crystals. If the crystals are much denser than the liquid around them, they may sink and form layers called cumulates.

The second stage of formation depends on what happens to the remaining liquid magma. If the magma erupts to the surface as lava, it cools very quickly. This rapid cooling creates a very fine-grained or even glassy matrix that surrounds the pre-existing phenocrysts. However, porphyry can also form entirely underground. In this case, the groundmass is still visible to the eye but remains much smaller than the phenocrysts. As the temperature drops, the remaining minerals crystallize all at once. They crowd each other out, which results in the fine-grained matrix.

The color of the stone even served as a physical stand-in for the expensive purple robes worn by leaders. Using such a difficult and beautiful material helped reinforce the power of the emperor to the public.

One of the most prestigious uses for porphyry was for imperial sarcophagi, which are large stone coffins. In the 4th and 5th centuries, Roman leaders began using this stone for their final resting places. Notable examples include the sarcophagi of Constantine the Great and Helena. This tradition of using porphyry for royal burials spread to other cultures and eras. For instance, the Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great used a porphyry tub for his tomb in Ravenna. Later, kings in Sicily also commissioned porphyry sarcophagi for their burials. These historical uses show how a geological material can become a central part of human politics and art.
