Born Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini on March 31, 1675, he was part of a noble family in Bologna. His father, Marcello Lambertini, died when Prospero was young. His mother, Lucrezia Bulgarini, later married Count Luigi Bentivoglio. Bologna was the second largest city in the Papal States at that time. Benedict XIV served as pope from August 17, 1740, until his death on May 3, 1758. His long reign was marked by deep scholarship and careful governance.

Lambertini was a polymath, which means he had deep knowledge in many different subjects.

He studied rhetoric, Latin, philosophy, and theology at the Collegio Clementino in Rome. He was particularly fond of the works of St. Thomas Aquinas. By age nineteen, he held doctorates in both sacred theology and law. This included both ecclesiastical law, which governs the church, and civil law, which governs states. His vast studies covered ancient literature, the human body, and the Baroque arts. He used this knowledge to publish many books and theological treatises.

His career in the church rose steadily through many important roles. He served as a Consultor and later as the Promoter of the Faith. In this role, he helped with the canonization of Pope Pius V. He also wrote a major four-volume treatise on how saints are recognized.

He was named a bishop in 1724 and later became the Bishop of Ancona. In 1726, he was created a Cardinal. He also served as the Archbishop of Bologna. These positions allowed him to manage church affairs and study law extensively.

The process of choosing him as pope was a long struggle. After Pope Clement XII died in February 1740, the cardinals entered a conclave. A conclave is a private meeting held to elect a new pope. This specific meeting lasted for six months. Many different groups, like the Imperialists and the French, had their own favorites. No single candidate could get the required two-thirds of the votes. Eventually, Lambertini was suggested as a compromise candidate. He was elected on the 255th ballot on August 17, 1740. He took the name Benedict XIV to honor Pope Benedict XIII.

As a ruler, Benedict XIV managed the economy of the Papal States with specific changes. He reduced taxes on some products to help the people. However, he also raised taxes on other items. He encouraged agriculture and supported free trade within his territories.

He also focused on culture and science. He created the Sacred and Profane Museums. These collections eventually became part of the famous Vatican Museums. He also supported the study of the human form and the Baroque arts. His leadership helped settle disputes with several European powers, including Naples, Spain, and Austria.

Toward the end of his life, Benedict XIV faced difficult political challenges. He had to deal with the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. In 1758, at the request of King Joseph I of Portugal, he expelled them from that country. The papacy did this reluctantly and provided very little theological reason for the move. This happened just before he died. Despite these pressures, he remained a respected figure across different religious groups. The writer Horace Walpole praised him for being an honest and uncorrupted leader.

Benedict XIV's life connected many different fields of study and power. He combined the roles of a religious leader, a political ruler, and a dedicated scholar. His work in canon law helped organize how church meetings, called synods, were held. He wrote a three-volume work called *De synodo dioecesana* to explain these procedures. His reign showed how a leader could use intellect to navigate the complexities of the Enlightenment. He left behind a legacy of art, law, and scientific interest that continued after his death.
