Pope Pius X was a major leader of the Catholic Church.

Sarto's early ministry showed his growing reputation for holiness. He was ordained a priest on September 18, 1858. During his time as a chaplain in Tombolo, he studied theology and canon law. He also worked to improve his preaching skills. In 1867, he became the archpriest of Salzano. There, he used his own labor and funds to restore a local church. He also expanded the local hospital. During a cholera outbreak in the early 1870s, he worked to assist the sick.
His path to the papacy involved significant political and religious shifts. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII appointed him bishop of Mantua. Sarto was later named a cardinal in 1893. This led to his appointment as the Patriarch of Venice in 1894. This appointment was difficult because the Italian government claimed a right to nominate the Patriarch. After serving as a cardinal, he was elected Pope in 1903.
As Pope, he focused on many specific reforms within the Church. He promoted Thomism, which is a philosophical method based on Thomas Aquinas. He used this as the main way of teaching in Catholic institutions. He also fought against modernism. He viewed modernism as a synthesis of many different errors that contradicted Catholic dogma.
One of his most lasting legacies was the Liturgical Movement. He wanted to encourage the "active participation of the faithful" in religious services. He expressed this principle in his 1903 document, *Tra le sollecitudini*. He also encouraged people to receive Holy Communion more frequently. To make this easier, he lowered the age for children to receive their First Communion. These changes altered how many people practiced their faith daily.
Despite his high position, Pius X lived with a sense of personal poverty. He was a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. He was also known for his firm demeanor. He refused to seek any special favors or wealth for his family members. His brother remained a postal clerk. His sisters lived in humble conditions near Rome. He even helped refugees after the 1908 Messina earthquake. He filled the Apostolic Palace with people seeking shelter long before the Italian government acted.
After his death on August 20, 1914, a strong devotion to him grew.
