His book was about the shape of the world. It was called *De situ orbis*. This book was used for many years. It stayed in use until the year 1500.

Mela had some very unique ideas. He said the Earth had five zones. He thought only two of these zones were fit for people. He believed people lived in a far southern zone. He called these people *antichthones*.

He thought the middle zone was too hot to cross. Mela also wrote about many coasts. He used the stories of sailors to help him. He described the shores of Spain and Gaul. He was the first to name the Orkney Islands.
