It is a long piece of equipment that requires great skill. Gymnasts use it to show off their balance and movement. This event is known for being one of the hardest for men. It focuses more on technique than on having huge muscles. Athletes must use their shoulders to lean and swing through the routine.

A gymnast performs many different moves on the horse. They often start with single-leg skills like scissors. The main part of the routine uses both legs at once. Gymnasts swing their legs in big circles around the horse. They can go clockwise or counterclockwise. Some moves are called flares when they spread their legs wide. They can also do spindles or turn while they circle.

They might even travel by moving their hands along the leather. The routine ends with a dismount, like a handstand or a swing.

This sport has a very long history.

The Romans used wooden horses to teach people how to mount and dismount. They even added these horses to the ancient Olympic Games. Later, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn helped develop modern exercises. He was the founder of the German Turnverein in the early 19th century. The equipment has changed a lot since those early days. Old horses had metal frames with wooden bodies and leather covers. Modern horses use metal bodies covered in foam rubber and leather. They also have plastic handles called pommels.

Rules for the pommel horse are very strict. The Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique sets these rules. Gymnasts must keep their legs straight and their feet pointed. They should keep their legs together most of the time. They only separate them for specific moves like scissors or flares. If a gymnast hits the horse, they lose points. They also lose points if they stop moving or pause. A good routine must use all three sections of the horse.

Many famous athletes have made their mark on this event. Max Whitlock from Great Britain is a very successful gymnast. He has won five global gold medals and three Olympic medals. Other legends like Zoltán Magyar and Miroslav Cerar won two Olympic gold medals each. Boris Shakhlin from the Soviet Union was also a double Olympic champion. In the World Championships, several workers have won three titles. This includes Xiao Qin from China and Kristian Berki from Hungary. These athletes show the amazing skill needed to master the horse.
