Polyvinyl acetate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Polyvinyl acetate is a very useful kind of glue. You might know it by many names. Some people call it white glue or school glue. Others call it wood glue or carpenter's glue. In the US, it is often called Elmer's Glue.

This glue is a type of polymer. A polymer is a large molecule made of many small parts. It is a thermoplastic, which means it can change shape with heat. It works best on porous materials. These are things with tiny holes like wood, paper, and cloth.

This glue works in a special way. It is often mixed with water to make a dispersion. This is a way to spread the glue evenly. When it is used, it sticks to the tiny holes in things like sandstone.

Sometimes, scientists add other things to it. If you add boron compounds like borax, something fun happens. The glue parts link together. This creates a thick, stretchy substance. You might know this as slime or Flubber.

However, tiny living things can also change the glue. Fungi, algae, and bacteria can eat it and cause damage.

People have been using this glue for a long time. A man named Fritz Klatte discovered it in Germany. He found it in the year 1912.

He even received a patent for it in 1913. Later, other scientists worked on how to make it. At first, they used a process with mercury and acetic acid. Now, makers mostly use a different way. They use a metal called palladium to help turn acetic acid into the glue. This helps make the parts needed for the polymer.

There are many interesting facts about how this glue is used. It is considered safe for food. Because of this, it is used in food packaging. You can even find it in chewing gum!

It is also used as a coating on Gouda cheese. In the 20th century, it was used on a very old book called the Archimedes Palimpsest. The glue was so strong that it was hard to separate the pages. This made it difficult for people to study the book in the 21st century.

Scientists also use this glue to create even more materials. They can use a process called hydrolysis to change it. This process turns the glue into polyvinyl alcohol.

This discovery helped a scientist named Hermann Staudinger. He used it to help form his theory about large molecules. The glue can also be used to make polyvinyl acetate phthalate. This is done by adding phthalic acid to the mixture. This shows how one simple glue can lead to many different things.
