This mineral is a main ore for caesium. An ore is a rock that holds useful metals. It can also hold rubidium. This makes it a very important resource. People find it useful for many jobs.

This mineral comes in many different colors. It can look white or gray. Sometimes it is even pink or blue. Most pollucite looks like a large mass. It is rare to find perfect crystal shapes. The mineral has a hardness of 6.5. It is brittle, so it breaks easily.

Scientists first described this mineral in 1846. August Breithaupt found it on Elba, Italy. He named it after Pollux. Pollux was a twin in Greek stories. This name fits because of a partner mineral. Pollucite is often found with petalite. Petalite was once called castorite.

Finding the caesium inside was a slow process. Karl Friedrich Plattner analyzed it in 1848. He missed the high caesium content then. Caesium was discovered later in 1860. A new analysis happened in 1864. This study showed the high amount of caesium. The ore is 23% to 25% caesium by weight.

Most pollucite is found in certain rocks. It grows in lithium-rich granite pegmatites. It lives near quartz and spodumene. It also stays near minerals like mica. A huge amount is in Canada. About 82% of known reserves are near Bernic Lake. This is in Manitoba. People mine it to help with oil drilling. They use caesium formate for this job.
