arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pointillism is a special way to paint. Artists use tiny, separate dots of color. They place these dots in patterns to make an image.

This style began in 1886. Two men named Georges Seurat and Paul Signac started it.

In most painting, artists mix colors on a tray. Pointillists do not do this. Instead, they put dots of color near each other. Your eyes and mind do the work. They blend the dots into new tones. This can make the colors look very bright.

Many artists use oil paint for this. Oil is thick and does not run or bleed.

Some artists used a similar style called Divisionism. They used larger shapes like cubes of color.

This style even moved into music. In music, notes are made in a special way. They do not follow a straight line. Instead, they sound like dots of sound. This makes the music have a unique texture. Some modern music is even inspired by dot paintings from Australia.
