Plot twist

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A plot twist is a big change in a story. It changes what you expect to happen. Some twists happen at the very end. We call these surprise endings. They can change how you see everything in the book.

Writers use many ways to make these surprises. They might hide facts from you. They might even give you false clues. These false clues are called red herrings. They lead you to the wrong answer.

One trick is the unreliable narrator. This is a person telling the story who is not being honest. They might hide the truth or make things up. Another way is a flashback. This is a sudden jump to the past. It can reveal a secret that solves a mystery.

Some stories use a cliffhanger. This leaves a character in a hard spot. It makes you want to see what happens next. You might also see a false protagonist. This is a character who seems like the leader. But they leave the story very early.

Some stories do not go in order. They use a non-linear narrative. This means the events are not in a straight line. You have to piece the story together yourself.
