Plot twist

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A plot twist is a special tool used in storytelling. It creates a sudden, radical change in the direction of a story. This change can shift what the audience expects to happen next. Sometimes, a twist happens right at the end of a book or movie. People often call these surprise endings. A good twist can change how you feel about everything that happened before it. It might even introduce a brand new problem for the characters to solve.

Writers use many different ways to build these surprises. One way is to hide important facts from the reader. Another way is to use misleading information to trick the audience. This is called a red herring, which is a false clue. These clues lead people toward the wrong answer. For example, the movie Gupt used famous actors to act like villains. This made the audience suspect the wrong people. In the book The Da Vinci Code, a character named Bishop Aringarosa acts as a red herring.

There are many specific types of twists that experts have named. Anagnorisis is a moment where a character suddenly discovers a true identity. In the play Oedipus Rex, the hero learns a shocking truth about his family. A flashback, or analepsis, is a sudden jump back to a past event. This can reveal a secret that explains a mystery. Some stories use an unreliable narrator to trick you. This is a storyteller who might be lying or confused. The novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie used this method.

Some twists change the way a story moves through time. A non-linear narrative does not follow a straight line from start to finish. Instead, the events are told out of order. The famous epic poem The Odyssey uses this style through flashbacks. A reverse chronology tells the story backward from the end to the beginning. A cliffhanger is another way to surprise people. This leaves a character in a very difficult spot at the end of an episode. In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker faces a huge revelation about his father.

Plot twists can also involve how characters behave or how they are introduced. A false protagonist is a character who seems like the main leader at the start. However, they are often removed from the story very early on. In the movie Psycho, the character Marion Crane is killed halfway through. Another type is peripeteia, which is a sudden reversal of a character's luck. This reversal must make sense within the rules of the story. Finally, there is the deus ex machina. This is when an unexpected event or person suddenly solves a problem.
