In 1887, a man named George Thatcher Balch wrote an early version. He was a soldier in the Civil War.

His version said, "I give my heart and my hand to my country."

Later, Francis Bellamy wrote a new version. He worked for a magazine.

He wanted the verse to be fast. He wanted it to take only 15 seconds. Bellamy's version was used for a big holiday in 1892. This was Columbus Day.

Some words changed over time. In 1954, the words "under God" were added. Congress also made the pledge official in 1942. Today, many schools say the pledge. Most states require it in public schools. However, the Supreme Court said students cannot be forced to say it. They cannot be punished if they do not say it.
