Plastic explosive is a soft and moldable solid material. Experts in explosives engineering sometimes call it putty explosive. It is very useful for explosive demolition. This means using explosions to break or cut things. Engineers like it because they can shape it by hand. They can mold it into perfect shapes to cut through metal or thick walls.

This material works in a very specific way. To make it soft, makers add plasticizers to the mix. These are substances that make the explosive flexible. Many modern types use a chemical called RDX. For example, Composition C was made of 88.3% RDX and 11.7% plasticizer. This made it easy to shape. However, it could become brittle when it was cold. Later versions like C2 and C3 changed these amounts to work better in different temperatures.

History shows us how these materials changed over time. Alfred Nobel invented the first plastic explosive called gelignite in 1875. Later, a chemist named Oswald Silberrad created a series called "Nitrols." During World War II, the British used Nobel 808 for many missions. It looked like green plasticine and smelled like almonds. The Special Operations Executive used it for sabotage. In 1944, a failed attempt to kill Adolf Hitler used this same explosive.

There are many different names and types used around the world. In the United States, a common type is Composition C-4. It often comes in white blocks or sheets. Another famous type is called Semtex. Different countries have their own versions, such as PE4 in Australia or Hexomax in France. Some versions are even different colors. For instance, Semtex-1H is orange, while Semtex 10 is black. These many names come from how they are made and where they are used.

You might see these materials working in unexpected places. In some tanks, plastic explosive is sandwiched between two steel plates. This is part of something called reactive armor. When a metal round hits the tank, the explosive detonates. This helps shield the tank by disrupting the energy of the incoming round. Plastic explosives are also used in factories. They can make steel much harder. This is helpful for making parts for trains or tools used to dig the earth.
