Plants are made of tiny parts called cells.

These cells have special parts that help them live.

Most plant cells have a hard outer wall. This wall is made of things like cellulose. It helps the plant keep its shape. The wall also has tiny holes called plasmodesmata. These holes let cells talk to each other. They let nutrients move from one cell to another.

Inside the cell, there is a large space filled with water. This is called a vacuole. It helps the cell stay firm. It also stores things like nitrogen.

Many cells have green parts called chloroplasts. These parts use sunlight to make food. This way of making food is called photosynthesis.

Other parts called plastids store things like starch or fat.

Some cells work like tubes to move things. Xylem cells carry water through the plant. Phloem cells carry food to different parts.
