Plagiarism is when someone uses another person's work as their own. This includes words, thoughts, or ideas.

It is often called literary theft. This means taking someone's writing without giving them credit.

This idea is very old. In the first century, a Roman poet used a word for "kidnapper." He used it because another poet stole his verses. Later, in the year 1601, a writer named Ben Jonson used the word "plagiary." This word helped describe people who steal writing.

In schools, plagiarism is a serious mistake. It is seen as being dishonest. Students might face big punishments. They could be suspended or even expelled from school. Some schools use software to find copied work. Some students try to trick the software. They change words to synonyms to hide what they did. This is called "Rogeting." Other students pay people to do their work. This is called "contract cheating."

Plagiarism is not the same as copyright law. Copyright is about legal rights to work. Plagiarism is about being fair and honest with people.
