He served as the 15th prime minister of Canada. His leadership spanned two different periods between 1968 and 1984. Trudeau was a central figure in shaping modern Canadian identity. He studied law at the Université de Montréal. Later, he studied political economy at Harvard University in the United States. In 1950, he helped found a publication called Cité Libre. He rose to prominence by opposing the conservative Union Nationale government in Quebec. He eventually joined the Liberal Party in 1965. This move was based on his belief that the New Democratic Party could not win power.

His rise to the highest office was very rapid. After being elected to the House of Commons, he became the minister of justice. In this role, he liberalized laws regarding divorce and abortion. He also worked to decriminalize homosexuality. His charismatic personality created a sensation known as "Trudeaumania."

This excitement helped him win the leadership of the Liberal Party in 1968. He then succeeded Lester B. Pearson as prime minister.

Trudeau's time in office involved many different types of leadership. He led the country through several federal elections. He won in 1968, 1972, and 1974. After a narrow loss in 1979, he won again in 1980. This made him the most recent prime minister to win four federal elections. He served for a total of 15 years and 164 days.

One of his most lasting achievements was the patriation of the Constitution. In 1982, he helped bring the Constitution home to Canada. This included the creation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This act achieved full Canadian sovereignty for the nation. However, his leadership was not without critics. Some accused him of arrogance and economic mismanagement. Others felt his policies hurt the economy of the Prairies and the culture of Quebec.

Trudeau's influence extended into the next generation of Canadian politics. He retired from politics shortly before the 1984 election. He later spoke out against the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords. He died in 2000 at the age of 80.
