He was born in Italy in 1922. His family moved to France when he was young. He wanted to study architecture. Instead, he learned to make clothes.

Cardin loved using shapes in his work. In 1954, he made a "bubble dress." This dress was shaped like a round bubble.

He also liked the "Navette" line. This style used skirts that looked like a spindle or an egg. Later, he made "Space Age" clothes. He was inspired by the first women in space. These clothes used sharp shapes and even looked like helmets.

Cardin was also a leader in men's fashion. He made suits that fit the body well. In 1960, he showed suits with no collars. These were so popular that the Beatles' tailor copied them.
