In 1890, she did something very special. She got the highest score on a big math exam. This exam was called the Mathematical Tripos. She was the first woman to do this. At that time, Cambridge did not give degrees to women. Because of this, she could not be the senior wrangler. That was the title for the top student.

Philippa studied how solids move in liquids. This field is called fluid dynamics. She won a scholarship to do this research. Later, she became a math teacher. She taught for ten years at Newnham College. In 1902, she moved to South Africa. She helped train new math teachers there. She also helped set up schools in that country.

Philippa later worked for the London County Council. She helped run schools in London. People still honor her today. There is a street named Philippa Fawcett Drive. A teaching college also bears her name. A summer program for math research exists too. She showed the world that women can excel at math.
