Phenolphthalein

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Phenolphthalein is a special chemical used to show how acidic or basic a liquid is.

Scientists call this a pH indicator. It belongs to a group of dyes known as phthalein dyes. This substance is a weak acid. It can lose ions when it is in a liquid solution. It is not very easy to dissolve in water. Because of this, people often dissolve it in alcohol for their experiments.

This chemical changes color depending on the pH level. The pH level tells us how strong an acid or base is. In acidic or near-neutral liquids, the substance is colorless.

If the acid is very strong, like concentrated sulfuric acid, it turns orange-red.

When the liquid is basic, the chemical turns pink or fuchsia.

If the base is very strong, with a pH higher than 13, the pink color slowly fades away. It eventually becomes colorless again. This happens because the chemical's structure changes in that environment.

Many people discovered different uses for this chemical over the years. Adolf von Baeyer discovered how to make phenolphthalein in 1871.

In 1900, the Hungarian government tried to use it to label real white wine. They wanted a way to mark local wine without changing the taste. They found that adding a base would change the color. A pharmacist named Max Kiss heard about this in New York. He used this idea to launch the product Ex-Lax in 1906.

There are many real-world uses for these color changes. In science classes, students watch the pink color fade to study how fast reactions happen. It is also used in toys like disappearing ink or magic hair dye.

The ink turns pink with a base but disappears when it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air. It can even help find blood using the Kastle–Meyer test. In this test, a colorless form is used on a sample. If hemoglobin is present, the sample turns pink immediately. This works for the blood of almost all vertebrates.

Phenolphthalein is also used to check the health of building materials. Concrete has a high pH because of how cement reacts with water.

When concrete reacts with carbon dioxide in the air, its pH level drops. If a 1% solution is put on normal concrete, it turns bright pink. If it stays colorless, it shows the concrete has changed. For a long time, it was also used as a laxative medicine. Now, it is being removed from many products due to safety concerns about cancer.
