It is often used as an indicator. An indicator is a tool that shows if a liquid is an acid or a base.

This chemical changes color in different ways. In basic liquids, it turns pink or fuchsia.

In acidic liquids, it stays clear. If the acid is very strong, it can turn orange-red.

In very strong bases, the pink color slowly fades away.

People use it to study many things. Scientists use it in science classes to learn about how fast changes happen. It is also used in toys. It can make disappearing ink! This happens when the ink reacts with carbon dioxide in the air.

It can even help find blood. In a test called the Kastle–Meyer test, a colorless form is used. If there is hemoglobin in a sample, it turns pink right away. This works for blood from almost all animals.

For a long time, people used it as a medicine to help with digestion. However, it is being removed from many products now. This is because of concerns about its safety.
