They called the land "Hamu Lithit." In the Cham language, "Hamu" means a hamlet in the field. "Lithit" means near the sea. When Vietnamese settlers arrived, they began changing Cham names into Vietnamese versions. For example, they changed Panduranga into Phan Rang. They also changed Panrik into Phan Rí. By applying the prefix "Phan" to a shortened version of "Lithit," the name Phan Thiết was created. This group of three places is known as "Tam Phan," or the Triple Phan.

Another theory links the name to a 15th-century Cham Prince named Po Thit. He served as the military governor for the area. His military camp was known as Camp Po Thit. Over time, Vietnamese speakers pronounced this camp name as "Phan Thiết." The history of the region is deeply connected to the ancient kingdom of Champa. Later, the area was absorbed into the Đại Việt Empire. In 1825, during the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng, Bình Thuận became an official province. Later, in 1898, Emperor Thành Thái signed a decree. This decree officially made Phan Thiết a city and the provincial capital.

The geography of Phan Thiết offers many different environments. The beaches of Kê Gà and Tiến Thành are known for being tranquil. These areas are ideal for swimming and relaxation. In contrast, the city center is much more lively. The Phú Hài ward features a coastline with hills. Many resorts in this ward are built high above the water on these hills. Tourism in the region saw a major turning point in 1995. During that year, foreigners discovered Rang Beach while watching a total solar eclipse. Because of incorrect guidebooks, many visitors mistakenly called the area "Mũi Né." This name eventually became widely used for the region east of the city center. Today, Mũi Né is a very popular destination. It consists of two communities with about 25,000 residents. One of these is Hon Rom, which is a fishing village. The area also features unique landforms like the orange sand dunes. Further north, about 23 kilometers away, are the large white sand dunes known as Bàu Trắng. There is also a "Red Canyon" near Hon Rom made of fragile red sand.
