Peter I Island is a volcanic island in the sea. 

The island is mostly ice. About 95% of the land is covered by a glacier. The ground is very cold and windy. Most of the year, thick pack ice surrounds the island. This makes it hard for ships to reach the land. You can only land at three small spots. One spot is a narrow beach on a peninsula.
The island is a shield volcano. This means it has a wide shape. The highest point is Lars Christensen Peak. It has a large, round crater at the top. Scientists are not sure if the volcano is still active.
Life here is tough. Only small plants like moss and lichens grow in the snow. Many animals live in the sea nearby. You might see whales, such as Blue whales or Humpback whales. Seals like the leopard seal also live in these waters. Some seabirds, like the Antarctic tern, visit the island.
No people live on the island. Since 1987, a small station has tracked the weather.

People first saw the island in January 1821. A man named Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen spotted it from his ship. He named the island after Peter I of Russia. However, his crew could not land because of the thick ice. It took many years before anyone actually set foot on the land. In 1929, an expedition led by Nils Larsen and Ola Olstad finally landed. They claimed the island for Norway. 
Since then, people have visited for many different reasons. In 1948, a ship called the Brategg landed to study the area. The crew built a small hut and left important documents inside. In 1987, scientists stayed for eleven days to take photos and maps. They also built an automated station to track the weather. 
Even though the land is harsh, many living things stay nearby. The only plants on the island are mosses and lichens. These small plants can survive the freezing wind and snow. The ocean around the island is full of life. You might find many species of mollusks in the sea floor. Many types of whales live in these waters, including Blue and Humpback whales.

This is an ultra-prominent peak with a wide, circular crater at its summit. The island is almost entirely covered by a glacier. In fact, about 95% of the surface is ice. The landscape features tall ice fronts and vertical cliffs. 
Landing on the island is very difficult. Most of the year, the island is surrounded by pack ice. This ice makes the land inaccessible to ships. There are only three specific points where landing is possible. These spots occur on the west side during short periods of the year. One area is the Kapp Ingrid Christensen peninsula. This peninsula divides the bays known as Norvegiabukta and Sandefjordbukta. On this cape, narrow strips of beach allow for landings. Another landing spot is in Norvegiabukta, which can be entered through a natural arch called Tsarporten. 
History shows that the island was difficult to reach for a long time. Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen first sighted the island on 21 January 1821. He commanded the ships Vostok and Mirny under the Russian flag. He named the island after Tsar Peter I of Russia. At that time, it was the southernmost land ever spotted south of the Antarctic Circle. However, drift ice prevented his crew from landing. In 1910, a French expedition led by Jean-Baptiste Charcot also saw the island but could not land due to pack ice. 
The first successful landing occurred on 2 February 1929. This was the Second Norvegia Expedition. It was led by Nils Larsen and Ola Olstad. The expedition was financed by the Norwegian whale-ship owner Lars Christensen. Christensen wanted to claim land for Norway to gain better whaling privileges. His expedition claimed the island for Norway. Norway later annexed the island in 1931. In 1933, it was officially declared a dependency. Another landing happened in 1948 by the ship Brategg. The crew built a hut and left a copy of the 1929 occupation document inside. 
Today, the island is governed by several rules and treaties. In 1961, Peter I Island became subject to the Antarctic Treaty. This treaty ensures the island is used only for peaceful purposes. It also allows free access for scientific investigation. Norwegian administration is managed by the Polar Affairs Department in Oslo. Since 1987, an automated meteorological station has been on the island to track weather. Scientists have visited to conduct aerial photography and topographical measurements. They have also performed marine biological and geological surveys. 
The environment is very harsh with freezing temperatures and strong winds. Because of the steady snowfall, vegetation is very limited. The only plants on the island are mosses and lichens. In the surrounding sea, you can find seaweed and algae. Despite the harshness, the island has high biodiversity. It is more biodiverse than other parts of the Bellingshausen Sea. For example, marine sediment studies revealed 22 species of mollusk in just four samples. Many whales live in the waters, including Blue, Humpback, and Sperm whales. 
Animal life on the island includes various seabirds and mammals. Southern fulmars, Wilson's storm petrels, and Antarctic terns use the island as a breeding ground. Penguins, such as Adélie and chinstrap species, visit the island infrequently. The waters are home to many seals. These include crabeater seals, leopard seals, and Weddell seals. There have also been several amateur radio DX-peditions to the island. These occurred in 1987, 1994, and 2006. Tourists also make sporadic landings when conditions allow.
