Alexander Island is a huge place in Antarctica. 

The island is mostly covered by a thick layer of ice. You might see mountain peaks poking through the white surface. These peaks are called nunataks. Many mountain ranges stretch north to south across the land. These include the Douglas Range and the Walton Mountains. Glaciers flow off the island in different directions. Some flow west into the Bellingshausen Sea. Others flow east into the George VI Ice Shelf. 
People first found this island in 1821. A Russian explorer named Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen led the trip. He named the land after the Russian Tsar, Alexander I. For a long time, people thought it was part of the mainland. It was not until 1940 that explorers proved it was an island. Two people named Finn Ronne and Carl Eklund traveled by sledge to find out. Later, in the 1950s, the British built a base called Fossil Bluff. 
There are many interesting features on the island. One is Hodgson Lake, which sits under a thick sheet of ice. This lake has been covered by ice for a very long time. The ice started to thin about 13,500 years ago. Another area is the Brahms Inlet. This is a long, ice-filled inlet on the north side of the Beethoven Peninsula. It was named after the German composer Johannes Brahms. There is also the Harris Peninsula, which is covered in snow. 
The ground beneath the ice has a busy history. Long ago, the movement of the Earth's crust shaped the island. This happened along the western edge of the Antarctic Peninsula. This movement created different types of rocks. Some rocks are volcanic, while others were formed from mud and sand. Scientists have even found fossils in the rocks here. These include ancient sea creatures like ammonites and bivalves. These fossils show us what life was like in the ocean a long time ago.

History shows how our understanding of this place has changed. A Russian expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen discovered the island in 1821. He named it Alexander I Land to honor the Russian Tsar, Alexander I. For many years, people believed the island was part of the Antarctic mainland. This changed in December 1940 when two explorers proved it was an island. Finn Ronne and Carl Eklund traveled by sledge to confirm its nature. Later, in the 1950s, the British built a base at Fossil Bluff. 
One of the most unique features is Hodgson Lake. This is a former subglacial lake that emerged from beneath an ice sheet. It sits under a thick layer of perennial ice, which is ice that stays year-round. The lake is long and has a deep water column. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the ice over the lake was very thick. This ice began to thin about 13,500 years ago. The ice retreated and left the lake covered by perennial ice before 11,000 years ago.
The geology of the island was shaped by powerful Earth processes. Much of this happened due to the subduction of proto-Pacific oceanic crust. Subduction is when one part of the Earth's crust slides under another. This occurred along the western margin of the Antarctic Peninsula from the Triassic to the Tertiary periods. 
Scientists have found many interesting things in these rock layers. The Fossil Bluff Group includes fossils of ancient sea life. These include ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, and serpulids. These fossils tell us about the ancient oceans that once covered the area. There are also volcanic rocks, such as alkali basalts, that erupted after subduction stopped. These eruptions happened at different times, ranging from 5.5 million years ago to less than 1 million years ago. The island's structure is also affected by the LeMay Range Fault, which runs parallel to the George VI Sound.
