Pescara is the capital city of the Pescara province in Italy. It is located within the Abruzzo region.

The city sits at sea level on the Adriatic coast. It is positioned exactly where the Aterno-Pescara River meets the sea. This strategic location has shaped the city for many centuries. Pescara is the most populated city in the Abruzzo region. As of January 1, 2023, it had 118,657 residents. If you include the surrounding metropolitan area, the population is approximately 350,000 people.

The geography of the city is defined by its relationship with water and land. The urban area spreads over a flat, T-shaped landscape. This shape covers the river valley and the coastal strip. To the northwest and southwest, the city is expanding into nearby hills. These hills were first occupied during the Neolithic period. The entire city is affected by groundwater. The level of this water can vary by up to one metre. This level is highest in the spring because of melting snow in the inland mountains. The city is also very close to the mountains. For example, the Passo Lanciano ski slopes are only a 30-minute drive away.

Pescara's climate is classified as humid subtropical, known scientifically as Cfa. It also has strong Mediterranean influences. The city experiences hot summers and cool winters. The weather is heavily influenced by the nearby Maiella and Gran Sasso mountain chains. When southwesterly winds blow, the city experiences a Foehn wind. This wind can cause a sudden increase in temperature and a decrease in humidity. Because of this, winters sometimes see temperatures that exceed daily averages. In the summer, the weather is usually stable and sunny. Sea breezes often keep temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius. However, a southwesterly Libeccio wind can change this.

The history of Pescara is very long and complex. Its origins go back even before the Roman conquest. It was originally founded as a port for the Vestini and Marrucini tribes. They used the port to trade with peoples from the Orient. At that time, the town and river were called Aternum. The town was connected to Rome via the Via Claudia Valeria and the Via Tiburtina. In the Middle Ages, the town was known as Piscaria, which means "abounding with fish."

The city has been ruled by many different groups. These include the Lombards, the Venetians, and the Spanish. In the 18th century, the population was only about 3,000 people. During World War II, the city was heavily bombed by the Allies. These attacks aimed to cut German supply lines. Since then, the city has been massively rebuilt into a modern coastal city.

Today, the city is divided into two main sections by the river. The historic center is on the south shore. This area was once a fortified town called the Piazzaforte. It was a military stronghold for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

One important building here is the Bagno Borbonico. It was a prison built starting in 1510 by order of Charles V. It now serves as the Museum of the Abruzzi people. The museum uses 13 halls to show 4,000 years of local history. On the north shore, you will find Piazza Italia. This square is home to the City Hall and the provincial government building.

Large rocks are placed in the sea as breakwaters. These protect the shore from erosion caused by water floods. Pescara is also home to major companies like De Cecco and Fater S.p.a. For travelers, the city offers the Abruzzo Airport and the Port of Pescara.

The city is also growing. On January 1, 2027, the towns of Montesilvano and Spoltore will be annexed into Pescara. This merger was approved by voters in a 2014 referendum.

Culture and education are central to life in Pescara. The city is the home of the G. d'Annunzio University. It is also famous for its international festivals. Every July, the city hosts Pescara Jazz. This was the first Italian summer festival dedicated to jazz. It has been a major European event since 1969. The city also hosts the Flaiano Prizes, which is an international film festival.
