Bari has a very long and complex history. In antiquity, the city was known as Barium. Ancient authors suggest this name meant "house" in the Messapic language. The city had strong Greek influences before the Roman era. It became part of the Roman Republic in the 3rd century BC. The city held strategic importance for trade. It served as a junction for the Via Traiana road. The harbor was a major center for fisheries as early as 181 BC.

During the Middle Ages, many different groups controlled Bari. The city was occupied by the Ostrogoths after the fall of Rome. Later, the Byzantine Empire and the Lombards disputed the territory. Bari served as a major slave depot in the Mediterranean. It was a central location for the trade of Slavic slaves. For twenty years, the city was the center of the Emirate of Bari. An emir named Kalfun captured the city in 847. The Frankish Emperor Louis II eventually extinguished the emirate in 871.

In the later Middle Ages, the city saw many shifts in power. The Normans gained a foothold in the region during the early 11th century. In 1071, Robert Guiscard captured Bari after a three-year siege. This ended much of the Byzantine power in the area. In 1087, relics of Saint Nicholas were brought to the city. The city also faced destruction during various conflicts. In 1156, William I of Sicily destroyed the city walls. This act was seen as a symbolic downgrading of the city's status.

Bari experienced significant events during World War II. In December 1943, German bombers attacked the city. An American ship named the SS John Harvey was destroyed during the raid. This ship was carrying 2,000 mustard gas bombs. The release of the gas caused death, chemical burns, and blindness. Stewart F. Alexander, a member of a medical staff, identified the gas. He convinced medical teams to treat patients for mustard exposure. His work with tissue samples helped develop an early form of chemotherapy called Mustine.

The city's population is quite large. The city itself has 315,473 inhabitants. The urban area contains approximately 750,000 people. The entire metropolitan province has 1.2 million inhabitants. The climate is a hot-summer Mediterranean type. This means the city has mild winters and hot, dry summers. High evapotranspiration also gives it a semi-arid quality.
