Period 6 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The periodic table is a special chart used to organize all chemical elements. One important row on this chart is called period 6. This row contains 32 different elements. It begins with the metal caesium and ends with the gas radon.

Scientists use these rows to show how elements behave. When elements have similar behaviors, they fall into the same vertical columns. This makes the table a helpful guide for understanding the building blocks of our world.

Elements in this row work in a specific way at a tiny level. They fill their electron shells in a set order. Most period 6 elements fill their 6s shells first. Then they fill their 4f, 5d, and 6p shells.

This pattern is a rule, but there are some exceptions. For example, gold does not follow this exact order. Understanding these shells helps scientists predict how an element will react with others.

Learning about these elements has taken a long time. In 1860, Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered caesium using flame spectroscopy.

Later, in 1907, three scientists found lutetium. Georges Urbain, Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach, and Charles James all worked on this. They found lutetium as an impurity in a mineral called ytterbia.

Even more recently, experts have worked to fix mistakes in how the table is drawn. In 1948, Lev Landau and Evgeny Lifshitz helped clarify where certain elements belong.

There are many interesting facts about the metals in this row. The lanthanides are a group of 15 metals.

Samarium-2

Many of them, like neodymium, have strong magnetic properties. Other metals in this row are very valuable, such as gold.

Europium

Some elements are quite rare or even dangerous. Thallium is very toxic to living things.

Gadolinium-4

Lead is the very last stable element in this row. Every element after lead is radioactive, meaning it is unstable.

You can see these elements working in many places today. Caesium is used in atomic clocks to keep very accurate time.

Terbium-2

Barium is used in fireworks to make green flames.

It is also used in X-rays to help doctors see inside the body. Some lanthanides are called rare-earth elements because of their unique traits.

Even the tiny amount of astatine on Earth shows how diverse these elements can be.
