Period 6 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The periodic table organizes chemical elements into rows called periods. A period 6 element is any element found in the sixth row of this table. This row is significant because it contains 32 different elements. It begins with the metal caesium and ends with the gas radon.

The table is designed so that elements with similar chemical behaviors fall into the same vertical columns. As the atomic number increases, the chemical behavior of elements repeats in a periodic way. This structure helps scientists understand how different elements will react with one another.

At a microscopic level, these elements follow a specific process to fill their electron shells. Generally, period 6 elements fill their 6s shells first. Following this, they fill their 4f, 5d, and 6p shells in that specific order. This sequence is often referred to as the Madelung rule. However, nature does not always follow strict rules, and there are exceptions. For example, gold does not follow this standard filling order.

Understanding these electron configurations is vital for predicting an element's properties.

One of the most important groups within period 6 is the lanthanides. These are a series of fifteen metallic elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71. They run from lanthanum to lutetium.

Praseodymium
Praseodymium

Many people also call these the rare-earth elements. While they are often shown in a separate row below the main table for neatness, they actually belong in the sixth period. Most lanthanides are f-block elements, which means they are characterized by the filling of the 4f electron shell.

Neodymium2

These elements are known for being chemically similar to lanthanum.

There is some historical complexity regarding how these elements are placed on the table. In the past, some periodic tables erroneously shifted the f-block one element to the right. This mistake was caused by early, incorrect measurements of electron configurations. In 1948, scientists Lev Landau and Evgeny Lifshitz pointed out that lutetium is not actually an f-block element. Since then, physical and chemical evidence has supported the modern placement.

Current reports from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, including those from 1988 and 2021, support the correct arrangement.

Period 6 elements also show a major shift in stability. Lead is currently the very last stable element in this row. Every element that follows lead in the periodic table is radioactive.

Europium

This means those elements are unstable and undergo decay. Bismuth is a unique case; its only primordial isotope, 209Bi, has a half-life of more than 10^19 years. This duration is over a billion times longer than the current age of the universe. After bismuth, elements like polonium, astatine, and radon are among the rarest and shortest-lived.

Gadolinium-4

In fact, less than one gram of astatine is estimated to exist on Earth at any time.

Individual elements in this period have very diverse and surprising properties. Caesium is a soft, silvery-gold alkali metal that is extremely reactive. It is one of only five metals that are liquid or near-liquid at room temperature.

Terbium-2

Barium is another metal in this row, often used in fireworks to create green flames.

Some metals are highly valuable, such as gold, while others are dangerous. For instance, thallium is incredibly toxic to living things.

Lutetium, the final lanthanide, is notable for having the highest hardness and density among its group.

These elements connect to many different scientific fields and modern technologies. Caesium-133 is used in atomic clocks to define the second in the International System of Units.

Barium sulfate is used in medicine as a radiocontrast agent to help doctors image the human gastrointestinal tract. In industry, elements like caesium formate are used as drilling fluids. The lanthanides are also essential in many applications due to their magnetic properties, such as neodymium. From medicine to electronics, the elements of period 6 play a massive role in our modern world.
