The People Power Revolution was a major turning point for the Philippines. It was a series of peaceful protests that happened in 1986. These demonstrations took place mostly in Metro Manila. People called it the EDSA Revolution or the February Revolution. It was a way for citizens to stand against unfair rules and violence. This movement helped bring democracy back to the country.

The protests worked through civil resistance. This means people used peaceful ways to show they disagreed with the government. They did not use weapons to fight. Instead, they gathered in large numbers to show their strength. Over two million Filipino civilians joined the crowds. They stood together on a long road called EDSA. This road is also known as Epifanio de los Santos Avenue.

Before the revolution, Ferdinand Marcos had been the leader for many years. He was first elected president in 1965. In 1972, he declared martial law to take full control. This allowed him to stop free speech and shut down news groups. He also arrested many people who disagreed with him. One famous leader he arrested was Senator Ninoy Aquino.

Things became very difficult for the country in the 1980s. The economy began to fail, and many people became very poor. In August 1983, Ninoy Aquino was killed at the airport. This event made many Filipinos feel great anger and sadness. People began wearing yellow ribbons to show they were united. They did this to honor Ninoy Aquino. Religious leaders like Cardinal Jaime Sin helped lead the people.

The revolution changed the history of the Philippines forever. By February 25, 1986, President Marcos and his family left for Hawaii. Corazon Aquino, the widow of Ninoy, became the eleventh president. This was a victory for the people and their rights. In 2003, the radio broadcasts from this time were recognized by UNESCO. This shows how important these voices were to the world.
