The Tunisian revolution was a major period of change in Tunisia. It began as a 28-day campaign of civil resistance. Many people joined street demonstrations to ask for change. They wanted more political freedoms and better living conditions. They also faced high food prices and many jobs were hard to find. This movement is sometimes called the Jasmine Revolution. This name comes from Tunisia's national flower.

Events moved quickly during this time. The protests started in the city of Sidi Bouzid. People used social media like Facebook to organize and share news. Because of this, some people call it the Facebook revolution. The protests spread from small towns to the capital city, Tunis. Labor unions also played a very important part in the protests. They helped people work together to demand new rights.

This movement started because of a very sad event. In December 2010, a man named Mohamed Bouazizi lost his vegetable cart. He was a young man who supported his large family. After a difficult encounter with a city worker, he set himself on fire to show his despair. This event caused huge public outrage. It helped spark the protests that grew across the whole country.

History shows that these protests changed the government. Zine El Abidine Ben Ali had been the leader for 23 years. He ruled the country starting in 1987. On January 14, 2011, he resigned and fled to Saudi Arabia. The revolution was a hard time for many people. Clashes between protesters and security forces led to 338 deaths and 2,174 injuries.

Today, the revolution is remembered as a step toward democracy. Tunisia held free and democratic elections after the leader left. A group called the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet even won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015. This group helped build a fairer system for the people. The events in Tunisia also inspired other countries. This chain reaction became known as the Arab Spring.
