He was a lawyer and a military officer. He served as the tenth president of the country. Marcos was the longest-serving president in Philippine history. He held this office from 1965 until 1986. His time in power changed the nation deeply. People still talk about his rule today.

Marcos followed a path through law and military service. He studied at the University of the Philippines. He was a top student in his law class. He also won many awards for rifle shooting. During World War II, he served in the United States Army. He was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese. Later, he claimed to be a great war hero with many medals. Researchers later found that many of these claims were not true.

His political career grew step by step over many years. He first served in the House of Representatives. Then he moved to the Senate of the Philippines. In 1965, he was elected to his first term as president. He was re-elected in 1969. At first, he was popular for building many new roads and buildings. These projects were paid for with loans from other countries. Soon, the country faced hard jobs like debt and inflation.

In 1972, Marcos changed how the country was run. He declared martial law and ruled as a dictator.

He used a new constitution to give himself more power. During this time, he silenced people who disagreed with him. He also used violence against his political rivals. His rule is often called a kleptocracy. This means people believe he and his family took a lot of money. Some say they took as much as $10 billion from the bank.

Many things led to the end of his rule. In 1983, a leader named Ninoy Aquino was killed. This caused much anger among the people. In 1986, a huge movement called the People Power Revolution began.
