A pentaprism is a special tool made of glass. It has five sides.

This shape helps move a beam of light. The prism turns light by a constant 90 degrees. This means the light moves at a right angle. It does this even if the light enters at an angle. This tool is very important for seeing things clearly. It helps fix how images look when light moves through glass.

Here is how the light moves inside. The beam of light enters the glass. It reflects inside the prism two times. These reflections happen because two faces have a mirror coating. The light does not use total internal reflection. Instead, the mirror coating makes the light bounce. The light then exits through a different face. Two faces are often coated to stop extra reflections. The fifth side just makes the shape easier to make.

Many cameras use a special version called a roof pentaprism. This is common in single-lens reflex cameras. A camera lens makes an image look flipped. It flips the image both vertically and laterally. A reflex mirror also flips the image. This leaves the image looking backwards from side to side. The roof pentaprism fixes this problem. It uses two extra surfaces that meet at 90 degrees. This turns the image back to normal.

There is another way to move light called a pentamirror. A pentamirror uses three mirrors instead of one piece of glass. This way is much lighter for a device. However, the light enters and exits the glass many times. This makes the light lose brightness. The light also scatters in a pentamirror. A pentaprism is much heavier than a pentamirror. But, it has only one entrance and one exit. This makes the light much clearer.

People use these tools in many different jobs. Surveyors use a double pentaprism to work. This is two pentaprisms stacked on top of each other. They might use a plumb-bob with them too. This helps them mark out right angles on a construction site. It helps make sure corners are straight. You can also find these prisms in some binoculars. They help you see a clear view of the world.
