A pentaprism is a special piece of glass. It has five sides.

This shape helps move a beam of light. The light turns a corner by 90 degrees. This means the light moves at a right angle. Inside the glass, the light reflects twice. Two faces of the glass have a mirror coating. This coating helps the light bounce.

Cameras often use a roof pentaprism. A camera lens makes an image look flipped. A roof pentaprism fixes this. It turns the image back to normal. This lets you see the world correctly through the lens. Pentaprisms work better than pentamirrors. A pentamirror uses three mirrors. It is lighter but can lose brightness. The light scatters in a pentamirror. A pentaprism is heavier. However, it has only one entrance and one exit. This makes the light very clear.

People also use them in surveying. A double pentaprism uses two prisms stacked together. It helps workers make straight corners on a building site.
