It was very popular in the 1870s and 1880s. This bike has a very large front wheel. It also has a tiny back wheel. The name comes from two British coins. The penny was big and the farthing was small. Looking at the bike from the side looks like those coins.

The big wheel helped the rider go fast. It did this because the wheel traveled a long way with each turn. These bikes used solid rubber tires. This meant the ride was not very smooth. The only part to soak up bumps was the saddle, or seat. Riding could be dangerous. If the wheel hit a rock, the rider might fall forward. This fall is called a header.

New inventions soon changed everything. A chain drive helped bikes go fast without huge wheels. Also, pneumatic tires, or air-filled tires, made the ride soft. These new bikes were called safety bicycles. They were much easier to ride.
