Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is a Peruvian economist and politician. He served as the 66th president of Peru from 2016 to 2018.

His career spans several decades of high-level work in finance and government. He has worked in both the private business sector and public administration. Kuczynski is known for his expertise in how money and policy affect nations. This dual experience helped him lead major organizations in both Peru and the United States.

Kuczynski's life began with a significant move across the globe. His parents fled Germany in 1933 to escape the Nazi regime. They arrived in Peru, where Kuczynski was born in the Miraflores District of Lima.

He received a very international education during his youth. He attended Markham College in Lima and Rossall School in England. Later, he earned a degree from Exeter College at Oxford University in 1960. He also received a master's degree from Princeton University in 1961.

His professional journey started with global economic institutions. In 1961, he joined the World Bank as a regional economist. He managed economic issues for six countries, including Haiti and several nations in Central America. He later became the Chief of Policy Planning at the World Bank. Kuczynski also spent years in the United States private sector. He worked at investment banks like Kuhn, Loeb & Co. and First Boston. In 1992, he helped found the Latin American Enterprise Fund in Miami. This private equity firm focused on investments throughout Mexico and South America.

Kuczynski returned to Peruvian politics through several different roles. In 1980, he served as the Minister of Energy and Mines under President Fernando Belaúnde Terry. During this time, he promoted Law 23231 to encourage oil and gas exploration. However, this law faced controversy due to tax exemptions for foreign companies. He later joined the campaign of Alejandro Toledo in 2000. After Toledo was elected, Kuczynski served as the Minister of Economy and Finance.

He also held the position of prime minister from 2005 to 2006.

After several unsuccessful attempts, Kuczynski won the presidency in 2016. He ran as a candidate in the 2011 election but finished in third place. In the 2016 election, he narrowly defeated Keiko Fujimori in the second round. He was officially sworn in as president on July 28, 2016.

During his term, he met with many world leaders. For example, he met with United States President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

He also conducted state visits to meet leaders from other nations, such as China.

His presidency ended following serious legal and political challenges. In December 2017, the Congress of Peru began impeachment proceedings against him. These proceedings followed accusations regarding payments from a Brazilian construction firm called Odebrecht. The firm was involved in a major scandal involving public works bribes. Kuczynski faced a second impeachment vote after videos emerged regarding alleged vote buying. To avoid a certain conviction, he resigned from the presidency on March 21, 2018.

Kuczynski's later years have been marked by ongoing legal investigations. Since April 2019, he has been in pretrial detention. The investigations focus on allegations of corruption and money laundering related to the Odebrecht case. These legal matters are part of a larger effort to examine how large companies interact with government officials. His life serves as a complex example of the intersection between international finance and national leadership. The events of his career continue to be a subject of study in Peruvian history.
