It covers infants, children, and young adults. Doctors in this field are called pediatricians. The name comes from Greek words meaning "healer of children."

Doctors have studied children for a very long time. Ancient Greek and Indian writers wrote about child health. In the 1700s, Nils Rosén von Rosenstein wrote a famous book. Many people call him the founder of modern pediatrics. The first children's hospital in the English-speaking world was Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Children are not just small adults. Their bodies work in different ways. For example, a child's stomach has less acid than an adult's. This change affects how they take medicine. Their kidneys and livers are also still growing. Because of this, doctors must use very careful doses. They must think about how a growing body absorbs and uses drugs. Pediatricians also work closely with parents to make health decisions.
